About
While there is some evidence to support these claims, the research is far from conclusive. Some men may also experience erectile dysfunction or infertility as a result of low testosterone. Testosterone levels naturally decline as men age, with levels typically peaking in the late teens or early twenties and gradually decreasing from there. It plays a crucial role in the development of male reproductive tissues and the secondary sexual characteristics that distinguish men from women. Testosterone is a hormone that is primarily produced in the testicles in men.
We can look back at the clinical trial and see that they found no difference in testosterone among the Maca group and the control group. Conclusions on testosterone, at this point, are not actually conclusive. To muddy the waters, the other study was… another literature review.
Four studies (39, 48, 54, 61) examined the effects of Tribulus terrestris on testosterone concentrations. The 1 study that showed no effect of an ashwagandha extract, Shoden®, on testosterone concentrations in men was conducted by Lopresti et al. (51). Four studies were conducted examining the effects of ashwagandha on testosterone concentrations (35, 50, 51, 62). The 2 studies that showed no effect of fenugreek supplementation on TT concentrations (57, 63) recruited healthy men, with participants in the Rao and Grant (57) study including men with benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH). Only 1 study demonstrated positive effects of Asian ginseng supplementation on testosterone (47), while 6 studies showed no effect of supplementation (Table 1). Seven studies were conducted examining the effects of Asian ginseng on testosterone concentrations (36–38, 47, 49, 56, 65). This systematic review includes randomized controlled trials examining the effects of herbs, spices, plants, and their extracts on testosterone concentrations in men.
Maca root has been studied extensively for its effects on hormonal health, though research shows complex relationships between this Andean plant and testosterone levels. A well-known study published in medical literature found that while maca improved sexual desire after 8 weeks of treatment, it did not affect testosterone levels. Many people turn to natural supplements like maca root to boost their testosterone levels. Research suggests there is no statistical difference in terms of testosterone levels between subjects who used maca root and those who didn’t. A 2018 study also found increased testosterone levels in aging rats supplemented with maca. The study found an increase in sexual desire, but no increase in serum testosterone levels.
While maca root is generally considered safe for most people, there are important considerations regarding who should exercise caution or avoid it completely. Maca root offers an impressive nutritional profile that supports overall health and potentially hormonal function. The optimal maca dosage for potential hormonal benefits typically ranges from 2-10 grams daily, often divided into multiple doses. Maca root contains a rich profile of nutrients that support hormonal health, while proper dosing varies based on the form and individual needs. Athletes and active individuals report increased energy and endurance when taking maca regularly. These improvements occur without changing hormone levels like testosterone or estrogen. Several studies have demonstrated maca's ability to support fertility by improving sperm concentration and movement.
In addition, many of the studies included in this review have design flaws that adversely affect the strength of conclusions derived from this systematic review. In this systematic review, many studies were underpowered, making it difficult to obtain statistically significant, between-group differences. Similarly, in vitro studies demonstrated reishi's ability to inhibit the activity of 5α-reductase (79, 86, 87). For example, inflammation and oxidative stress have an inverse relationship with testosterone, as demonstrated by several human and animal trials (9, 81–83).
He didn’t notice any significant changes in his testosterone levels (he got them checked), but he did feel more energetic and experienced improved mood. While it’s been claimed that Maca can increase testosterone, the scientific community’s consensus doesn’t entirely support this. Often, it’s touted as a miraculous herb for a range of health benefits, from boosting energy to improving mood. Unlike testosterone-stimulating herbs that require cycling, maca can be taken daily long-term. Black maca is strongest for gym performance, sperm motility, memory, and potential testosterone support. Men with hormone-sensitive cancers should consult their oncologist before use, though maca does not directly manipulate hormone levels. For men preferring a concentrated resin ritual, BeepWell Shilajit Plus Resin combines pure Himalayan shilajit with maca root, KSM-66 ashwagandha, and black pepper — the most potent natural vitality trio in one morning jar.
